Toadstool Leather Corals, also known as Toadstool Mushroom Corals, are hardy soft corals admired for their large, leathery caps and flowing polyps. They are excellent beginner corals due to their adaptability, tolerance of a wide range of conditions, and unique aesthetic appeal in reef aquariums.
Description:
Common Names: Toadstool Leather Coral, Toadstool Mushroom Coral, Sarcophyton
Scientific Name: Sarcophyton spp.
Family: Alcyoniidae
Temperament: Peaceful (can release mild chemical toxins, so provide adequate space and filtration)
Difficulty: Easy
Native Habitat & Distribution:
Widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, commonly found in shallow reef flats and lagoons where they receive steady water movement and ample light
Aquarium Care & Setup:
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Lighting: Moderate to high; polyps extend best under 100–250 PAR
Flow: Moderate to strong; helps them shed mucus and maintain health
Placement: Place on rockwork with room to expand; avoid shading nearby corals as they grow large
Care Tips & Feeding:
• Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, though they can absorb dissolved nutrients from the water column
• Growth Pattern: Large, mushroom-like stalk with a wide leathery cap that extends polyps during the day
• Tankmates: Compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates
• Behavior: Periodically sheds a waxy layer to rid itself of algae buildup—this is normal and helps maintain healthy growth

Are Toadstool Leather corals easy to keep?
Yes, they are very hardy and beginner-friendly, thriving in a wide range of tank conditions.
Do Toadstool Leather corals need feeding?
They are photosynthetic but may benefit from occasional supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or coral foods.
Why does my Toadstool Leather look closed up?
They regularly shed a waxy coating, during which polyps retract. This is a normal process and usually lasts a few days.
Where should I place a Toadstool Leather coral in my tank?
On mid to upper rockwork with moderate to strong flow to assist in shedding and ensure full polyp extension.
Are Toadstool Leather corals aggressive?
They are semi-aggressive due to chemical toxins they release, which can affect nearby corals. Provide spacing or use activated carbon to reduce effects.
