Cabbage Leather corals are hardy soft corals named for their folded, ruffled growth form resembling cabbage leaves. They come in shades of green, tan, brown, or purple and add texture and movement to reef aquariums. Their adaptability, durability, and ease of care make them an excellent coral for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.
Description:
Common Names: Cabbage Leather Coral, Ruffled Leather, Lettuce Coral
Scientific Name: Sinularia species
Family: Alcyoniidae
Temperament: Peaceful (releases toxins that can affect nearby corals)
Difficulty: Easy
Note: Like other leathers, Cabbage Leather corals periodically shed a waxy coating to remove algae and debris. During this time, polyps may retract for several days.
Native Habitat & Distribution:
Cabbage Leathers are widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific, where they inhabit shallow reef slopes, lagoons, and rubble zones with moderate water movement.
Aquarium Care & Setup:
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Lighting: Moderate to high; coloration and growth improve under stronger lighting
Flow: Moderate to strong; helps remove detritus and supports healthy tissue turnover
Placement: Rockwork or sandbed with room to expand; avoid placement too close to sensitive SPS corals
Care Tips & Feeding:
• Feeding: Photosynthetic, though occasional broadcast feeding with phytoplankton or coral foods may enhance health
• Growth Pattern: Encrusting to leafy, ruffled growth resembling cabbage leaves
• Tankmates: Compatible with most reef-safe fish and corals, but chemical toxins may affect sensitive SPS if kept too close
• Behavior: Periodic shedding is normal and helps maintain coral health

Yes, they are very hardy and well-suited for beginners.
Do Cabbage Leather corals need feeding?

They periodically shed a waxy layer to clean themselves, during which polyps retract for several days.
Where should I place Cabbage Leather corals in my tank?
On rockwork or the sandbed in moderate to strong flow with room to expand.
Are Cabbage Leather corals aggressive?
They are peaceful, however, like other leathers, they do release chemical toxins that can affect nearby corals. Use carbon and provide spacing.
