Stylophora corals, often called Cat’s Paw corals, are small polyp stony (SPS) corals known for their compact branching structure and vibrant coloration. They are moderately hardy for SPS, making them suitable for intermediate to experienced reef keepers. With strong flow, high lighting, and stable water parameters, they thrive and display dense, bushy colonies.
Description:
Common Names: Stylophora Coral, Cat’s Paw Coral
Scientific Name: Stylophora species
Family: Pocilloporidae
Temperament: Non-aggressive
Difficulty: Moderate
Native Habitat & Distribution:
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, Stylophora inhabit shallow reef slopes and lagoon areas with strong water movement and ample sunlight.
Aquarium Care & Setup:
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Lighting: High-intensity reef lighting (200–400 PAR) to promote vibrant coloration and robust growth
Flow: Strong, turbulent flow to simulate natural reef conditions and keep branches clean
Placement: Upper to mid-level rockwork with space for branches to expand
Care Tips & Feeding:
• Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from occasional fine particulate foods or phytoplankton
• Growth Pattern: Dense branching colonies that can form compact bushy structures
• Tankmates: Compatible with other SPS corals and peaceful reef fish; avoid aggressive coral-eating species
• Behavior: Polyps extend slightly during the day, adding texture and shimmer to the colony

Are Stylophora corals easy to keep?
They are moderately hardy SPS corals and best suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists.
What lighting do Stylophora corals need?
High-intensity reef lighting (200–400 PAR) is required for strong growth and coloration.
Do Stylophora corals need feeding?
While primarily photosynthetic, occasional feedings of fine particulate foods or phytoplankton can enhance growth.
Where should I place Stylophora corals in my tank?
Upper to mid-level rockwork with strong, turbulent flow and enough space for branches to expand.
Are Stylophora corals aggressive?
They are non-aggressive and can be safely placed near other SPS corals with proper spacing.
How fast do Stylophora corals grow?
Growth is moderate; under optimal conditions, colonies form dense, bushy structures over time.
