Mushroom corals (Discosoma, Rhodactis, eclectus, Ricordea, etc.) are soft corals known for their hardy nature and vibrant colors. They grow in dome or umbrella-like shapes and can form carpets across rockwork, making them excellent starter corals for both beginners and experienced reefers. Their wide variety of colors and textures brings unique character to any reef tank.

Scientific Name & Identification

Mushroom corals belong to multiple genera, including Discosoma, Rhodactis, eclectus, Ricordea, and more. They are identifiable by their fleshy, disk-shaped polyps, which may be smooth, bumpy, or textured depending on the species. Ricordea mushrooms are especially popular for their bubble-like tentacles and intense fluorescent colors.

Natural Habitat

Native to the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, mushroom corals inhabit shallow reef areas and lagoon zones with low to moderate water flow. They often grow on rubble or shaded reef crevices where they form colonies.

Aquarium Care & Setup

Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

pH: 8.1–8.4

Salinity: 1.023–1.026

Flow: Low to moderate; strong flow can cause them to detach and drift

Lighting: Low to moderate; most mushrooms thrive under 50–100 PAR

Placement: Rockwork or substrate, with space to spread and avoid overshadowing

Feeding Mushroom Corals

While mushrooms are largely photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional feeding. They can absorb dissolved nutrients and may accept very fine coral foods, phytoplankton, or powdered coral blends. Rhodactis and Ricordea species may capture small meaty foods when target-fed

Growth and Behavior

Mushroom corals spread by budding and pedal laceration, forming carpets across rocks and substrate. They are semi-aggressive and may overtake neighboring corals if not given space. Their hardy nature and ability to adapt make them excellent candidates for a wide range of reef aquariums.

Tankmates

Compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates. Avoid aggressive corals or those prone to chemical warfare near mushrooms, as they can engage in competition for space.

Are mushroom corals easy to keep?

Yes, they are among the easiest and most forgiving corals, making them ideal for beginners.

Do mushroom corals need to be fed?

Not necessarily, but occasional feeding of fine particulate foods can enhance growth and coloration.

What lighting do mushroom corals need?

Low to moderate lighting (50–100 PAR) is ideal. Too much light can cause bleaching.

Where should I place mushroom corals in my tank?

Place them on rockwork or substrate in areas with low to moderate flow, where they have room to spread.

Will mushroom corals sting other corals?

Yes, they are semi-aggressive and can overgrow or irritate nearby corals. Provide spacing to prevent conflicts.

How fast do mushroom corals grow?

They spread steadily through budding and pedal laceration, often carpeting rocks and substrates over time.
