Devil’s Hand Leather corals are hardy soft corals named for their finger-like lobes that resemble outstretched hands. They come in shades of green, tan, brown, or purple and add dramatic movement and texture to reef aquariums. Their durability, adaptability, and ease of care make them a great choice for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.
Description:
Common Names: Devil’s Hand Leather, Finger Leather Coral
Scientific Name: Sinularia dura
Family: Alcyoniidae
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (releases chemical toxins that may affect nearby corals)
Difficulty: Easy
Note: Devil’s Hand Leather corals can periodically shed a waxy outer layer to remove debris and algae. Polyps may retract during this process for a few days.
Native Habitat & Distribution:
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, Devil’s Hand Leathers inhabit shallow reef slopes, lagoons, and rubble zones with moderate water movement.
Aquarium Care & Setup:
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Lighting: Moderate to high; coloration improves under stronger light
Flow: Moderate to strong; helps remove detritus and supports healthy polyp extension
Placement: Rockwork or sandbed with enough space to allow lobes to expand without touching sensitive corals
Care Tips & Feeding:
• Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, though occasional broadcast feedings with phytoplankton or fine coral foods may enhance health
• Growth Pattern: Encrusting base with finger-like lobes
• Tankmates: Compatible with peaceful reef fish and corals; chemical toxins may affect nearby SPS if kept too close
• Behavior: Periodic shedding is normal and polyps retract temporarily; gentle movement is normal
