The lawnmower blenny, also known as the sailfin or algae blenny, Is one of the best utility fish in the hobby. As its name suggests, they spend all day grazing on hair and film algaes, and make an excellent option for hair algae control in tanks too small for a tang. With a mottled brown coloration, they're not the most beautiful fish in the reef, but they have a charming 'grumpy old man' appearance that belies their true peaceful nature.

Care

Lawnmower blennies grow up to 5" long, but due to their mostly sedentary nature, their minimum tank size is surprisingly small at 30 gallons. They'll spend most of their day perched on various rocks, constantly foraging for algae. Due to their peaceful nature, usefulness, and interesting behavior, they make a great addition to any tank. They are considered reef safe, but have been known to occasionally take a nip at clam mantles or SPS polyps in passing.

Diet

Lamnmower blennies, being mostly herbivorous, thrive on a diet rich in vegetable matter such as spirulina or nori.
