Bubble Corals, also known as Plerogyra or Pearl Bubble Corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals prized for their unique bubble-like vesicles that expand and contract with water movement. Their soft, inflated polyps shimmer with shades of green, gold, purple, and pink, creating a mesmerizing focal point in reef aquariums. Hardy and moderately easy to care for, Bubble Corals are suitable for both beginner and intermediate reef keepers looking for visually dynamic corals.

Description:

Common Names: Bubble Coral, Pearl Bubble Coral, Plerogyra Coral

Scientific Name: Plerogyra species

Family: Euphylliidae

Temperament: Semi-aggressive (extends sweeper tentacles at night)

Difficulty: Moderate

Note: Bubble Corals are often confused with Euphyllia species like Hammer or Frogspawn, but they can be distinguished by their large, inflated vesicles and slower, more deliberate polyp extension.

Native Habitat & Distribution:

Bubble Corals are found throughout the Indo-Pacific, typically in lagoon areas and protected reef slopes with low to moderate water flow, where their delicate vesicles can inflate safely without being damaged by strong currents.

Aquarium Care & Setup:

Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

pH: 8.1–8.4

Salinity: 1.024–1.026

Lighting: Moderate (50–150 PAR); avoid direct high-intensity light to prevent bleaching

Flow: Low to moderate; gentle water movement helps vesicles expand and promotes healthy growth

Placement: On sandbeds or lower rockwork, leaving space for sweeper tentacle extension

Care Tips & Feeding:

• Feeding: While photosynthetic, Bubble Corals benefit from supplemental meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral pellets 2–3 times weekly

• Growth Pattern: Forms large, inflated bubble-like vesicles over short, branching skeletons

• Tankmates: Compatible with peaceful reef fish and invertebrates; avoid aggressive corals within stinging range

• Behavior: Vesicles expand during the day for photosynthesis and contract at night when sweeper tentacles emerge

Are Bubble Corals easy to keep?

Yes, they are moderately hardy and suitable for intermediate reef keepers.

What lighting do Bubble Corals need?

Moderate lighting (50–150 PAR) is ideal; avoid intense light to prevent bleaching.

Do Bubble Corals need feeding?

Yes, they thrive with supplemental meaty feedings a few times per week.

Where should I place Bubble Corals in my tank?

On sandbeds or lower rockwork with ample space around them for tentacle extension.

How fast do Bubble Corals grow?

Growth is moderate; colonies expand slowly, developing larger vesicles over time.

Are Bubble Corals aggressive?

They are semi-aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night to defend their space.
