Blastomussa corals, often called Blastomussa or Pineapple Corals, are popular LPS corals known for their vibrant colors and fleshy polyps. They are moderately hardy and thrive under low lighting and gentle flow, making them a great choice for both beginner and experienced reef keepers.

Description:

Common Names: Blastomussa Coral, Pineapple Coral

Scientific Name: Blastomussa merletti

Family: Mussidae

Temperament: Peaceful

Difficulty: Moderate

Native Habitat & Distribution:

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, especially in lagoon areas and reef slopes with low to moderate water movement.

Aquarium Care & Setup:

Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

pH: 8.1–8.4

Salinity: 1.024–1.026

Lighting: Low, ideally 50–100 PAR—too much light can cause bleaching, while too little may reduce coloration and growth

Flow: Low to moderate; avoid strong direct flow to allow full polyp extension

Placement: Place on partially shaded areas of rockwork

Care Tips & Feeding:

Feeding: While photosynthetic, they benefit from target feeding small meaty foods like mysis, brine shrimp, or coral-specific pellets 2–3 times per week

Growth Pattern: Encrusting colonies with large, fleshy polyps

Tankmates: Compatible with peaceful reef fish and invertebrates; avoid aggressive coral-eating species

Behavior: Polyps expand during the day and night, adding color and movement to the aquarium

Are Blastomussa corals easy to keep?

Yes, they are moderately hardy LPS corals. Stable water conditions and moderate lighting will keep them healthy.

Do Blastomussa corals need to be fed?

While they get energy from photosynthesis, target feeding 2–3 times per week with meaty foods improves growth and coloration.

What lighting do Blastomussa corals need?

They thrive under low lighting (50–100 PAR). Excessive light may cause bleaching, and insufficient light can reduce coloration.

Where should I place Blastomussa corals in my tank?

Lower rockwork or sandbed areas with low to moderate flow are ideal.

Will Blastomussa corals sting other corals?

Blastomussa are generally non-aggressive.

How fast do Blastomussa corals grow?

Growth is moderate and depends on lighting, flow, and and most importanty feeding. Colonies expand outward with fleshy polyps over time.
