Leptoseris corals, often referred to simply as 'leptos,' are stunning plating LPS corals known for their delicate, encrusting growth and ability to thrive in lower-light reef zones. They are highly sought after for their glowing fluorescence under blue lighting and their ability to cover rockwork with vibrant, textured plates.

Scientific Name & Identification

Leptoseris corals (Leptoseris species) are thin, plating LPS corals with small, closely spaced polyps. They encrust and spread across rock surfaces in delicate layers and are most easily identified by their ultra-thin plates and striking fluorescence under actinic lighting.

Natural Habitat

Native to the Indo-Pacific, Leptoseris are commonly found on deeper reef slopes where light is lower, often between 30–100+ feet deep. Their ability to thrive in low light makes them unique among plating LPS corals.

Aquarium Care & Setup

Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

pH: 8.1–8.4

Salinity: 1.024–1.026

Flow: Low to moderate, gentle enough to avoid damaging thin plates but steady enough to prevent detritus buildup

Lighting: Low to moderate (30–100 PAR). Too much light can bleach or burn colonies

Placement: Lower rockwork or shaded areas, where they can plate out naturally

Feeding Leptoseris

Leptoseris corals rely primarily on photosynthesis but can benefit from supplemental feeding. They accept small particle foods such as reef roids, phytoplankton, or fine powdered blends, which may encourage faster growth and more intense coloration.

Growth and Behavior

Leptoseris grow by encrusting rockwork and forming thin, plating colonies. Their slow to moderate growth rate makes them manageable, and their delicate structure requires careful placement to avoid damage.

Tankmates

Compatible with peaceful reef fish and invertebrates. Avoid aggressive corals with strong sweeper tentacles, as Leptoseris’ thin tissue is easily damaged.

For more information, check out our Leptoseris Care Guide.

Are Leptoseris corals easy to keep?

Yes, they are moderately easy, but require low light and careful placement to avoid bleaching.

Do Leptoseris corals need feeding?

While photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods.

What lighting do Leptoseris corals need?

Low to moderate lighting (30–100 PAR). Intense lighting can bleach or kill colonies.

Where should I place Leptoseris in my tank?

On lower rockwork or shaded areas where their plating growth can spread naturally.

How fast do Leptoseris corals grow?

They grow at a moderate to fast pace, gradually encrusting rockwork with thin plates.

Are Leptoseris corals aggressive?

No, they are peaceful, but their delicate tissue makes them vulnerable to stings from nearby aggressive corals.
