The WA Heartbreaker Acropora displays rainbow of colors with a neon green base with purple growth tips and rusty red-orange polyps. It thrives under high light and strong water flow. Moderate care is needed, making it best suited for experienced aquarists. It grows in a branching pattern, adding height and complexity to reef tanks.

Acropora corals (Acropora species) are identified by their branching, tabling, or staghorn growth patterns. They have small, tightly packed polyps that extend slightly, giving colonies a textured appearance. Their colors are among the brightest in the reef hobby, ranging from neon greens and blues to deep purples and multi-colored morphs.
Natural Habitat
Native to reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, Acropora dominate shallow, sunlit reef crests and upper slopes. They thrive in areas with intense water movement and strong sunlight—conditions that must be mimicked in aquariums for long-term success.
Aquarium Care & Setup
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Flow: Strong, turbulent flow to keep tissues oxygenated and prevent detritus buildup
Lighting: High-intensity reef lighting (250–400 PAR) for coloration and growth
Placement: Upper rockwork with space for branching colonies to grow outward and upward
Feeding Acropora
While primarily photosynthetic, Acropora benefit from supplemental feeding of fine particulate foods like reef roids, phytoplankton, and amino acid supplements. Occasional feeding encourages faster growth and enhanced coloration.
Growth and Behavior
Acropora exhibit a variety of growth forms, including branching, plating, and staghorn colonies. They are fast-growing under ideal conditions but can be sensitive to parameter swings. Their small polyps create a textured, shimmering effect when extended in high flow.
Tankmates
Best kept with other SPS and peaceful reef fish. Avoid aggressive corals with long sweeper tentacles and fish known to nip at SPS (certain angelfish and butterflyfish). Compatible tankmates include tangs, wrasses, anthias, and reef-safe invertebrates.

Are Acropora corals hard to keep?
Yes, they are best suited for experienced reef keepers due to their demand for high light, strong flow, and stable parameters.
What lighting do Acropora corals need?
High-intensity reef lighting (250–400 PAR) is required for strong coloration and growth.
Do Acropora corals need feeding?
They rely mostly on photosynthesis but benefit from occasional target feeding with fine coral foods.
Where should I place Acropora in my tank?
Upper rockwork in strong, turbulent flow for best growth and coloration.
How fast do Acropora corals grow?
They can grow rapidly under ideal conditions, often becoming large colonies in well-established SPS tanks.
Are Acropora corals aggressive?
They are generally not very aggressive but can outcompete neighbors with fast growth, and may sting neighboring acropora. Provide spacing to avoid shading or crowding.
