Kuhli Loach Care Guide

Kuhli Loaches (Pangio kuhlii) are one of the most unique and entertaining fish you can add to a community aquarium. With their eel-like bodies, bold striped patterns, and quirky burrowing behavior, they're a conversation starter in any tank. Despite their unusual appearance, they're peaceful, hardy, and relatively easy to care for.

Ideal Water Parameters

Kuhli Loaches originate from the slow-moving streams and rivers of Southeast Asia. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water.

• GH: 0–5 dGH (soft water preferred)
• KH: 0–5 dKH
• Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
• Nitrate: Under 20 ppm

Tank Setup

The most important thing for Kuhli Loaches is a soft substrate and plenty of hiding spots. They love to burrow and squeeze into tight spaces — it's completely normal behavior, not a sign of stress.

• Substrate: Fine sand is ideal — they love to burrow and sharp gravel can injure their delicate undersides
• Hiding spots: PVC pipes, caves, driftwood, dense plant roots, and leaf litter are all appreciated
• Plants: Java fern, anubias, and floating plants work well
• Filtration: Cover filter intakes with a sponge — Kuhli Loaches are notorious for squeezing into filter intakes
• Lid: A tight-fitting lid is essential — they are escape artists

Feeding

Kuhli Loaches are nocturnal bottom feeders. They'll scavenge for food after lights out, so feed them in the evening for best results.

• Sinking pellets and wafers
• Frozen bloodworms, tubifex, and daphnia
• Blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber)
• They'll also clean up leftover food from other fish

Social Behavior

Kuhli Loaches are social fish that do best in groups of 3 or more. In groups, they're more active, more visible, and less stressed. A single Kuhli will often hide constantly; a group will be out exploring and interacting regularly.

Tankmates

Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and get along with most community fish. Ideal tankmates include:

• Tetras (Cardinal, Ember, Rummy Nose)
• Rasboras
• Corydoras
• Dwarf gouramis
• Freshwater shrimp (adults are generally safe)

Avoid aggressive or large fish that may bully or eat them.

Common Health Issues

• Ich: Loaches are scaleless and more sensitive to medications — use half doses of ich treatments and avoid salt.
• Skinny disease: Internal parasites can cause wasting. Treat with a broad-spectrum antiparasitic.
• Injuries from sharp substrate: Always use fine sand to protect their delicate bellies.
