The Engineer Goby, also sometimes referred to as a Convict Goby, is a species of large superficially eel-like goby notable for its light and dark patterning that changes orientation as it matures. As a juvenile, the stripped pattern runs horizontally across the body, and gradually changes to a mostly vertical pattern in adulthood.

Care

The engineer goby grows to about 1' long, and requires a tank of around 50 gallons or more. They require plenty of sand and rock to burrow and hide in. Due to their love of burrowing, it's important that the rockwork be very stable on the floor of the aquarium to prevent rockslides. It's also important to note that they'll likely move the sand around to their preference, which could result in coral frags getting covered regularly. In the wild, they exist in schools, so they should be kept in small groups, or at least pairs to feel the most comfortable. They're considered moderately difficult to care for, reef safe, and peaceful.

Diet

Engineer gobies should readily accept most frozen and prepared foods.
