Assorted Platies - Xiphophorus spp.

Platies are one of the best beginner fish in the aquarium hobby. They're a very hardy fish, often found in small stagnant ponds in the wild. They're also very peaceful, and breed readily in captivity.               

Care

Platies grow to around 2.5", with their calm and peaceful nature allowing them to be kept in aquariums of 10 gallons or more. As with other livebearers, it's recommended to keep only one male per 2 or 3 females to reduce stress on the females and competition amongst the males. Sex can be differentiated by looking at the anal fin. The female's will be fanned out like most fish, while the male's forms a pointed structure called a gonopodium, which is used in breeding.    

Diet

Platies aren't picky eaters, and will readily accept most prepared foods.
