Cherry Dottyback (Pholidochromis cerasina)

The Cherry Dottyback (Pholidochromis cerasina) is a strikingly vibrant marine fish, prized for its brilliant red coloration and hardy nature. This species is well-suited for reef tanks, providing a beautiful focal point while also being a great choice for more experienced aquarists due to its semi-aggressive behavior.

Description:

Common Name: Cherry Dottyback

Scientific Name: Pholidochromis cerasina

Family: Pseudochromidae

Size: Up to 3 inches (7.5 cm)

Color: Vivid cherry-red body with a slightly lighter underbelly, making it a standout addition to any marine aquarium.

Native Region:

The Cherry Dottyback is native to the Western Pacific, where it inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas, often taking shelter in crevices or among coral branches.

Aquarium Setup:

Tank Size: Minimum of 30 gallons (115 liters)

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C)

pH: 8.1-8.4

Salinity: 1.023-1.025 specific gravity

Substrate: Fine sand or crushed coral, with ample live rock for hiding places and territories.

Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a diet rich in brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Supplement with vitamin-enriched foods to maintain vibrant coloration.

Care Level:

Difficulty: Moderate

Temperament: Semi-aggressive, especially toward smaller, similarly sized fish or other dottybacks. Cherry Dottybacks can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks.

Lifespan: 3-5 years in captivity

Territorial Behavior:

Like other dottybacks, Cherry Dottybacks can be territorial and aggressive, especially in smaller or crowded tanks. They do best when provided with plenty of hiding spots and space to establish their territory. In larger tanks with proper aquascaping, their aggression can be minimized.

Additional Tips:

Tank Mates: Best suited for tanks with other semi-aggressive or larger fish, such as tangs, larger clownfish, or wrasses. Avoid housing them with shy, slow-moving species, as they may be harassed. Cherry Dottybacks are also reef-safe and can cohabitate with corals and most invertebrates.

Behavior: Cherry Dottybacks are bold and active, often seen darting in and out of rock formations. They can be aggressive toward tank mates that invade their territory, but this behavior is typically manageable in larger tanks with sufficient rockwork and hiding spots.

Water Quality: Pristine water conditions are crucial. Regular water changes and good filtration are necessary to maintain health and vibrant colors.
