Endler Guppies are a hybrid species on the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and the Endler's Livebearer, Poecilia wingei, named for their discoverer, Dr. John Endler. The two species are very similar, and are able to interbreed readily, producing fertile offspring. Guppies have been selectively bred for decades to produce larger sizes and countless color variations, while pure Endler's Livebearers retain their smaller, less derived wild characteristics.

Care

Endler Guppies, like the parent species, are highly sexually dimorphic fish. The female are much larger at 1.75", and generally display a rounder and more drab appearance. Males grow to around 1", and display a multitude of different color patterns and tail shapes, as well as a generally sleeker appearance. They're an incredibly hardy and peaceful fish, and their small size makes them ideal for nano aquariums. They make a great option for shrimp tanks, as they're small size and surface dwelling tendencies make them unlikely to bother even the smallest shrimp. As with most livebearers, they should be kept either in groups of all males, or in a ratio of 2-3 females per male to avoid excessive breeding related stress on the females.

Diet

Endler Guppies are omnivorous, and will readily accept most fine prepared foods. Live or frozen foods may also be offered for increased protein, encouraging faster growth and better coloration.
